Power-to-Gas Summit 2024

Hydrogen at its best!

On 5 September 2024, we met at the Bernsteinsee holiday and leisure resort in the district of Gifhorn (Lower Saxony), where our first power-to-gas plant has been supplying the hotel and administrative buildings with emission-free electricity and heat since the end of 2020.

We invited friends, business partners and guests to visit the power-to-gas technology in practice and discuss the future of energy in a relaxed atmosphere. There were exciting presentations and interesting discussions – a great opportunity to talk together about the possibilities, opportunities and challenges in sustainable energy supply and to share ideas with each other.

‘Welcome to our Power-to-Gas Summit 2024!’ – With these welcoming words, the Managing Director of Bernsteinsee Holger Junk opened the event together with our Managing Directors Klaus Schirmer and Martin Weiss, as well as the moderator Zackes Brustik.

Our hotel buildings, rooms, catering including the kitchen and the water ski facility are supplied entirely with green electricity.

The flats at the riding stable and our administration are also connected to the power station.

Frank Doods (State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Building and Digitalisation of Lower Saxony) then welcomed the guests.

He praised the joint innovative strength and emphasised the importance of such forward-looking projects, especially in view of the challenges that have been overcome and those that will be faced in the future. According to Doods, these developments send a strong signal for energy policy and the path to an emission-free future.

This project proves that such innovations can work without government regulation.

With a pioneering spirit, a path was voluntarily chosen here that shows that it can be done: It can be done! You have to have the courage and that is what this project stands for.

Rebecca Freitag (ehemalige UN Delegierte und Unternehmerin) bei ihrer Keynote.
Rebecca Freitag, former UN Youth Delegate and expert on sustainability, presented in her keynote ‘Confidence: The feasible view of the future’ that the biggest hurdle to sustainable transformation lies in negative thinking and a linear understanding of the future.

She emphasised the power of positive tipping points: Small changes can cause abrupt, irreversible upheavals, for example in the energy sector or in the circular economy. She expects such tipping points in the coming years thanks to falling costs and growing social acceptance.

Positive tipping points act like invisible catalysers:

We push the ball up the mountain with great effort, but all it takes is a small push at the summit – and the change becomes irreversible.

– Rebecca Freitag –

Dr. Ricard Petranovic, Principal Technical Consultant (ABB AG), then gave a keynote speech on ‘Energy transition 2.0’.

He emphasised the importance of decentralised energy factories and an expanded distribution grid for the decarbonisation of industrial locations. He addressed the transition from large-scale fossil-fuelled power plants to renewable energy sources and the role of AI-supported, self-regulating distribution grids.

Dr Petranovic, who has worked in energy management and CO₂ reporting at ABB for over 17 years, has been driving forward the optimisation of energy systems since 2019.

As a leading technology group, ABB is always looking for partnerships.

CYTOK’s concept, which combines both technical and financial aspects, has convinced us – which is why we want to work together.

Power-to-Gas Summit 2024 - Marion Oelke (HZDR - Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf) und Julia Bock (WPW Leipzig) bei ihrer Keynote.

In their keynote speech, Marion Oelke from the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Julia Bock from the WPW Leipzig GmbH provided insights into the ‘GreenH2’ project. The project assesses the potential of a sustainable energy supply using power-to-gas technology and sector coupling.

They presented specific approaches to reducing emissions and developing a climate-neutral energy system. Both speakers, with experience in building management and energy system planning, presented the results of the jointly conducted feasibility study with the aim of decarbonising the Rossendorf site in the long term.

After a year and a half of joint testing and simulation

we have proven that our project works.

Plant sizes, boundary conditions and financing have already been determined and there is sufficient space available at the site. We see the potential of this technology as suitable.

– Marion Oelke –

Through intensive dialogue, we have developed a forward-looking concept for this research site and are now ‘Ready to Realise!

Today clearly shows us how well things are going – emission-free energy generation, which we all want, and full satisfaction from the boss of the Bernsteinsee Resort.

– Julia Bock –

Another central item on the summit programme was the ceremonial handover of certificates to our valued Japanese partners from GPSS. The experts from GPSS were extensively trained in the application and implementation of our power-to-gas technology in advance.

This certification not only emphasises the close cooperation between CYTOK and GPSS, but also marks a significant milestone in the international deployment of our emission-free energy solutions.

The guided tour of our power-to-gas plant gave participants the opportunity to experience every step of our technology for converting surplus solar power into synthetic natural gas (SNG) live.

By asking the hydrogen pirates experts direct questions about the technology, participants were able to gain in-depth insights into the patented solution for emission-free energy generation.

During the panel discussion with the District Administrator of Gifhorn, Tobias Heilmann, key topics relating to sustainable energy supply and the opportunities offered by power-to-gas technology were discussed.

The discussion provided an in-depth insight into the regional and global challenges and showed how innovative solutions can contribute to achieving climate targets.

Acknowledgement

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made the Power-to-Gas Summit 2024 an unforgettable experience:

Special thanks to the speakers who enriched the talks and thus in-depth discussions with their expertise and passion.

Our heartfelt thanks also go to the fantastic team at the Bernsteinsee Hotel, who, under the direction of Holger Junk (Hotel Operator) and Petra Leushake (Marketing), provided first-class catering and a great stay.

Another highlight was the professional moderation by Zackes Brustik, who linked the various programme items with ease and created a lively atmosphere. Thank you for that!

Our thanks also go to Lukas Geu (GEU Media) and Jan Zuch (SAY VISUELL), who managed to capture the special moments of the Summit in a unique way with their film and photographic recordings.
